New items are in from New York based jeweler Kaye Blegvad. Blegvad is also an illustrator whose work had been featured in a few national publications including the New York Times. See some of her work here. Her jewelry line reads like a grim fairytale, the sense of illustration strong in each whimsical and sometimes dark piece. Feathers earrings seem about to flutter away, sword necklaces are ready for a duel and frolicking deer seem about to leap off of a necklace in slow motion, page flipping animation style. Danielle, who competed on the most recent season of Lifetime's Project Runway, will show a collection inspired by Transatlantic Travel. Expect sea worthy garb made of chiffon and wool in icy blues, grays and greens on models with sea tousled hair and wind chapped cheeks.

I am freaking LOVING this Frida Kahlo inspired spread that was featured in the March issue of Italian Marie Claire. Photographer and Stylist Wendy Bevan plays with the eclecticism trend, mixing florals and bold 1960's inspired prints, mixes it with the classic latin trend and builds a beautiful and inspiring homage to artist Frida Kahlo.

I Need Neon Now

I am currently completely obsessed with anything neon. Specifically, but not limited to, the shade of neon yellow that boarders on neon green (similar to the color of a tennis ball). I feel that by clothing myself in neon I am waging a sartorial rebellion against a colorless world of gray melting snowbanks and barren trees. Neon was huge on spring 2011 runways, often paired with white or black. To do it right go minimal and chose styles that are structured without a lot of detail or print. Neon colors work well with the colorblocking trend and can be paired with primary colors like red or blue. If you chose print the best option is do a take on modern tribal, paring it with the graphic prints. To avoid looking like you time warped back to Urban Outfitters circa 2008 chose artful prints and form a foundation the by adding mod or structured details like a blazer or fitted cropped pants. For the less adventurous, adding neon accessories to a otherwise minimal palette is a easy way to get in on this trend.

Dark Inspirations

I have a tendency for dark and moody works. When I go to the Institute of Arts I always get mesmerized by a few paintings that haunt me. Some images I will superstitiously not talk about because they still creep me out. This one I can feel before I even enter into the exhibition room; I know it will conjure up all sorts of dark and chilly reactions. My heart beats faster, as I get closer and closer to her room; I feel like I’m obligated to see her and the feelings start flooding through me. This painting is Lucretia by Rembrandt

Also, I recently found this October Italian Vogue photo spread striking me the same way. Dozens of times a day I walk by a National Geographic magazine on the coffee table at my work that I can not open knowing it contains pictures of oil soaked animals. But something inside me is always drawn to someone who can make something so disturbing and terrible into beauty. In fact there are a few photos I just can not include, as I still try to escape absolute disturbia.

January Style Icon: Josephine Baker via Prada Spring 2011

For spring 2011 Miuccia Prada chose to pay homage to 20th century innovator Josephine Baker. As a burlesque dancer and singer in 1920's Paris Baker was not only the most successful American entertainer working in France, but one of the most famous African Americans of her time. Baker is notorious known for a performance where she danced topless with skirt made of artificial bananas. She was a fixture in France's Art Deco movement of the late 1920's and 1930's which embraced ethnic art primarily from Asia and Africa. Baker was also the first African American woman to star in a major film. She was known as muse to Picasso, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Christian Dior. Truly a remarkable innovator and trendsetter she went on be become a figurehead of the 1950's american civil rights movement.

For Prada's spring 2011 collection Miuccia Prada, a woman who's design career is comparatively innovative to Baker's spirit, pairs the style of Josephine Baker with Art Deco influences, ties in the current fashion trends of 1960's stripes, day glo colors, and minimalism for a collection that feels fresh, fun, relevant and unlike anything else on the spring runways.

Avoid the Grey is and has always been all about inspiration. The very idea behind the name of our annual January show is the idea that we hope you may find the inspiration in spring fashion to make it through the remainder of our bleak, often long Minnesota winter. We decided to incorporate inspiration further into Avoid the Grey this year by organizing our roster of local clothing and accessory designers into segments inspired by our favorite things for spring 2011. Three clothing designers and three accessory designers will be showing designs inspired by each of the trends below.

Avoid the Grey has always had an overarching theme or inspiration, thoughin past years the local designers showing have not designed around it, we have carried the theme into the show's finale which showcases Cliché national and international labels. Last year it was a woodland fairy tale setting complete with ushers in forest animal masks. Our finale last year a mashup part 1990's grunge al a Courtney Love and part fairytale heroine. The year before was a flower child theme playing on spring 2009's maxi dress trend. For this year's show we pay homage to fashion and music icon Elvis Presley. Avoid the Grey 2011: Jail House Rock plays on the current late 1950's-1960's fashion trend with a modern finale inspired by a W Magazine spread by Steven Meisel featuring some stylish jailbirds in compromising situations.

Niki English Designs Her Senior Line

English's final mood board for her senior line

Minneapolis designer Niki English has been a fixture on Cliché’s local designer roster for more years now than any of us can remember. Originally selling exceptionally crafted leather handbags, then premiering garments with a edgy style unique to the Twin Cities design scene. English’s design aesthetic is a dark structural vision constructed of knits, leather, and geometrical patterns. The quality of her garments is always top notch, executing garments with a structure that is seldom seen in work by local designers. As English is about to receive her degree in Apparel Design and Pattern Making from the University of Minnesota, she is in the process of constructing her most ambitious line to date. I had the privilege of viewing two of the mostly completed garments for her senior line recently, and found myself completely awestruck. Niki was able to share her sketches and mood boards from her design process but she wants to keep the actual garments under wraps until the big reveal at the U of M’s annual senior show February 19th, 2011. The line is constructed of wool, leather, and silk chiffon, with inspirations from darkness, apocalypse, and war torn landscapes, as English puts it “Armor for the daily war.”

December Character Icon: Margot Tenenbaum

Margot Tenebaum is Gwenth Paltrow’s secretive, chain smoking, barrette wearing, playwright character in Wes Anderson’s 2001 fairytale like film centered on a dysfunctional family of failed child prodigies and their degenerate absent father. The Royal Tenebaums is full of eccentric fashion set against a trademark Wes Anderson saturated colorful backdrop. Each character has a distinct costume that reflects the trappings of their childhood aspirations. Margot’s standard look is a Lacoste style striped tennis dress, 1930‘s fur coat, red barrette, and 1960‘s loafers. It’s a mix of girlish innocence meets bohemian artist, evoking both 1960’s bohemia and 1990’s grunge. Play around with Margot’s look by trading a long sleeve mini dress or sleeveless shift for her tennis dress, add knee socks, or trade out loafers for maryjanes, and don’t forget a heavy hand with your black eyeliner.

I recently found this spread from Lula Magazine. It is from an older issue but still love it. It reminds me to stop wearing the same few black dresses that I always wear to work. No, I will not be wearing sequin shorts with bare legs, but with tights and a blazer it could be a lot of fun outside the office. Or a skirt, with white shirt and bow tie is something I could carry off at work. Perhaps even losing the tie and pulling in some suspenders (which of course Cliché has both in stock right now!) Ok now I am thinking about trousers, suspenders and tie……

Style Icon: Marianne Faithfull

In the 1960's singer, songwriter, actress, and most famously girlfriend of Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull knew how to embrace what I like to call "beatnik chic". From her shaggy haircut to her long sleeve mini dresses paired with fur she had the 1960's cool girl look down. 2007 Was A Good Year

Recently I picked up a September issue of Elle, I opened it mid-magazine, and flipped through my favorite sections: “Trends” and “Elle Shops”. After drooling over a few choice items and mentally noting a few pages I may want to revisit for inspiration at a later date, I moved into deeper into the magazine, encountering the usual saturation of ads. “Wait a minute, I remember this D&G ad...” It also seemed a bit passe that Lindsay Lohan was on the cover, but I then I don’t really claim to understand why some celebrities are given fashion covers and I personally look forward to a return to the times when models were models and actresses were actresses (but that is another conversation). Getting back on track: I took a closer at the cover, and saw that this Elle was from September 2007. Intrigued by how I was so totally convinced that I had been looking at collections from 2010, not from three years ago, I reopened the magazine from the beginning and started browsing. What I found was surprising: chic shearling coats, head to toe red, military inspiration, equestrian and menswear inspiration, secretary blouses paired with high waisted wide leg denim, capes, 1960’s inspiration by way of structured mod dresses and bright colors paired with chunky heeled multi colored loafers and chain handled bags, mid length faux fur jackets, chunky-fringy sweaters, and 1950’s references by way of polka dots, cocoon coats, red lips, and cat-eyed eyeliner. This summarized a list that I might have rattled off had you asked me the day before about trends for fall/winter 2010. What was going on?

Hello Cliché Friends,

I am very excited to welcome you to our new Cliché blog. It will be composed by our right hand gal, Andrea Oseland and myself. As most of you know, we try to make Cliché the go to spot for the latest, hippest clothing in the Twin Cities. As the buyer for the store, I must admit, I get inspired at least twice a day by something fashionable. It could be an old movie, flowers, runway, or some other whimsy. I tend to get intense and insistent that some of these inspiration are sheer genius, some I hang on to for years, others are fleeting. These epiphanies influence my marketing and buying for Cliche. I hope to share some of these flashes of fashion insight with you as product comes in. Andrea will share featured items and her personal perspective on fashion and inspiration.

We held our first designer meeting for Avoid the Grey 2011 on Monday, and we are very excited about this year's event! For those of you who are not familiar, Avoid the Grey is an fashion show produced by Cliché, annually in January, where our local designers premiere collections for spring and we give you a sneak peak at what we will be stocking from our national brands for the upcoming season. It's a fun event and a great way to support local fashion with around 40 local clothing and jewelry designers wrapped into one show. We have decided to change things up a bit with our production style this year with multiple designers collaborating on styled segments to showcase their brands. Our overarching theme for 2011 will be "Jailhouse Rock". Attendees should look forward to 1950's inspirations, Elvis, and mock mugshots of our local designers displayed during the show. Avoid the Grey will be held on January 29th, 2011 at Old Arizona Theater, 2821 Nicollet Ave Minneapolis, MN.

Audrina Partridge Wears Amanda Christine

TV’s The Hills star and Dancing with the Stars contestant, Audrina Partridge was recently photographed wearing a dress from Minneapolis designer Amanda Christine’s fall line. Partridge wore the 3 tier dress, a structured mini dress, with excentuated shoulder details and a triangle cutout on the lower back that Cliché stocked for Fall 2010. It’s very exciting to see a local designer, who has been with Cliché almost since the beginning, get some much deserved national attention. Cheers Amanda!

We worried that we may have went overboard on ordering Cliché favorite’s Spanish import, Skunkfunk, for fall 2010. But, as in past seasons, Minneapolis is just as excited about this line as we are. See their website here. Skunkfunk combines comfort, quality, and wearability with bold patterns, unique colors, and cutting edge, totally mind blowing design. You won’t want to miss Cliché clothing designers Carmichael Claith, Jenny Carle, Kathryn V. and accessory designers Bionic Unicorn, TimmiLynn, and Freedom From Doubt November 6th in runway show SCENEaSOTA. These are a few images from the absolutely gorgeous look book for the event, designed by Chris Larson with photography by Amy Gee; see the whole look book here. This will be the third SCENEaSOTA produced by Cliché designer Maritza Ramirez. SCENEaSOTA will offer a pre-show reception that includes drink specials, appetizers, DJs, a meet and greet with the designers and a sneak preview of the art work featured in the space. The party continues after the runway with DJs and dancing. Doors at 8pm, runway show at 9:30pm, Loft2, 401 First Ave North, Minneapolis.

Alex Prager for W Magazine

As big, big fans of both fashion and classic cinema, we were absolutely floored by the fashion spread Spellbound in the November issue of W Magazine. The spread, by photographer Alex Prager, is voyage into 2011's resort collections via homage to film great Alfred Hitchcock. The array of intriguing characters, set against a stunning background of brilliant colors, will have your mind so busy spinning with an endless array of possible plots that are conspiring amongst them, that you might forget to take in the fashion.When you are through daydreaming and you remember that you are looking at a fashion spread you will be equally thrilled with the 1960's inspired selections from what was a very memorable resort season. Prager also shoots this spread as a short film, titled Sunday, that can be seen here.

Currently on our racks you will find whimsical, vintage inspired pieces from one of our favorite vendors: Dear Creatures. See their website here. We love Dear Creatures for their spot-on interpretations of fashions from the 1950’s and 1960’s. You may have seen their marketing campaigns featuring celebrities Zooey Deschanel and Elle Fanning. Their fall 2010 collection takes inspiration from Nancy Drew: “Clothing that reflects curious girls' instinct for smart and timeless fashion.” We agree.

We are crazy about Cliché newcomer, Sarah M. Holm! You may remember Sarah’s designs turning a few heads at this spring's Envision fashion event, showing an all black line featuring Tim Burton-esque styling and head pieces. We have been hearing great things from customers who have been lucky enough to snatch up her first round of dresses for Cliché, turning a few heads themselves. A sleeveless, black full skirted, nip waisted dress, with full back cut out (pictured above) practically flew off the racks. And, we have just been replenished in a classic charcoal knit, pencil dress, with short sleeves, a high collar, and a tie neck (very Joan from AMC’s Mad Men) that we were sold out off. We can’t wait to see what Sarah has in store for spring 2011.

Amanda Christine and K.Jurek Handbags

Now in the store: two of our favorite local designers, Amanda Christine Designs and K.Jurek, have joined forces this fall on a handbag collection. Amanda Christine known for designing feminine, clean lines, that feel east coast chic and K.Jurek who is known for her bohemian, layered, and decidedly west coast look, may seem like an unlikely paring. However, their handbag collaborative that uses luxe leathers, flowing fringe, and equestrian detailing is beautiful marriage of both esthetics that fans of both lines will be excited tote.

Tulle

This season we really stocked up on Tulle’s classic and vintage inspired outerwear. They offered irresistible fall styles, of which a couple of sizes remain. For winter we picked up their classic peacoat, single and double breasted, in a variety of colors, and a gorgeous faux fur, 3/4 sleeve,1950’s inspired coat. We also loved their classic peacoat with a slight military twist. Jackets aren’t all that Tulle has to offer, we also found fabulous skirts, sweaters, and dresses, and (yes!!) a leopard print hand warmer that doubles as a clutch!
